Check Ins 012 | Flippin' Good

This post was supposed to be posted yesterday but my ulcer was acting up and I had to lie in bed almost all day long. Better late than never, right?

Flip Burger

Unlike your typical Mcdonalds, Flip Burger does not use mass produced buns and frozen patties. Not only do they bake their own buns, they also make their own beef patty from freshly ground meat. As if that isn't enough, Flip Burger also does not serve veggies in their burgers. Does that sound insane? I know. You see, the reason why they do not put vegetables in their burgers is because they wish to serve you an "honest" burger. Based on their research, most people also do not enjoy vegetables in their burgers so why not completely get rid of them, right?

I know what you're thinking: a burger without veggie? Won't that be greasy? Yes and no. When it comes to burgers, I don't think there will be a non-greasy option. Even if there is, I don't think it's going to taste good. What I can say, though, is that Flip's burgers are a different kind of greasy compared to Mcdonalds or other fast food chains out there, if that even makes any sense. Their buns are amazing, their beef patty is super juicy and tender and their fish... Oh man, I loooove their fish burger. It's the best in town and the best compared to other fast food chains out there. I mean, you can see it for yourself: that fish is huuuuge! Dang, I'm drooling as I'm typing this.

Now, aside from their scrumptious burgers, hear this: they offer free refills for drinks (soda, tea and coffee), ice cream AND brownies to go with your ice cream. Boyfriend and I also ordered their hash browns and guess what, it's not A hash brown but rather, FIVE hash browns the size of Mcnuggets.  The only downside was how weird the vanilla ice cream tasted. I was so bummed about the ice cream but my boyfriend thinks their brownies were awesome. I personally don't have opinions regarding the brownies since I'm not a huge fan. Last but not least, they have very reasonable and affordable price. I'd compare their price range to Carl's Jr, to be honest.

Flip Burger's motto is "flippin' good" and I have to say, they really live up to their tagline. 100/10 would definitely come back for more!

Halal Guys

When Halal Guys opened their first store in Indonesia, people were queuing up like crazy outside the store. Curious, I asked my boyfriend to accompany me on Friday after work because I wanted to see if this actually lives up to the hype. If you live in Indonesia, you know that the locals here are easily swayed by trends and sometimes, the hype is just not worth it. Still, I wanted to prove it myself.

I bought the regular platter (IDR 55,000 / US$4.14) and chose a combo of chicken and beef for my toppings. For its price, I don't think it's worth it. It's not even worth the hype. I've heard people talk about how they loooove Halal Guys' secret white sauce and although I admit that the white sauce is indeed delicious, it's nothing out of this world amazing. Aside from their secret white sauce, I don't find the others super special; the rice tastes bland, the hot sauce is nothing but spicy (not even a hint of saltiness!) and it leaves this weird, smoky aftertaste in my throat.

I don't know, you guys... maybe Middle Eastern cuisine does not fit my taste bud or maybe I'm just so used to food with really prominent taste (if you are Indonesian, you know what I mean) that this tastes like nothing for me. It's weird because I'm someone who can handle food from other countries really well even if their spices do not taste as "badass" as Indonesian food. I personally love kebab too so when I couldn't accept this one, I was a little surprised. For its price, I also don't think it's worth it.

Matcha Macchiato

I'm a huge fan of KOI Cafe. I am obsessed with their signature macchiato drink so when they recently released a new matcha series, I went gaga over it and told my boyfriend that I NEED TO TAKE A SIP. Yes, capslock is necessary. As always, their macchiato line is PERFECT. The matcha tastes like true matcha, like true ocha instead of those fake, sweetened matcha powder used in drinks. I really hope this is a permanent menu but even if it isn't, I will definitely order this as much and as often as I possibly can.

The Beach

At the end of the day, boyfriend and I decided to go to the nearest beach. Well, it's not really a beach but there's this neighborhood called Pantai Mutiara (lit. "Pearl Beach") where houses and cafes are situated facing the sea. It's a little difficult to explain but I hope you get the basic idea. This neighborhood, this area is popular among couples who just want to watch the sea and chat, sort of like a free pass dating locating if you will. A lot of cars tend to stop by, free park and simply do nothing but watch the sea — something he and I like to do since both of us love the sea.

Then again, who doesn't love free dating spots? (wink)

Books

  • Finished reading Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley. A 3.5/5 young adult sci-fi fantasy read. I will review it later but to summarize, it wasn't a bad read. In fact, it's something new and weird and I enjoyed it. Will definitely pick up the second book.
  • I don't know what to read after Magonia so I chose The Thousandth Floor by Katharine McGee. Some people said this book is a blend between Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl and suit people who like them. While I don't read PLL or GG, I did watch the series.

Random bits

  • Boston based company Cocobeet recently opened their first store in Indonesia and I tried their vanilla powder mylk, a superfood power smoothie made from cashew milk, flaxseeds, dates, vanilla and sea salt. I love it so much, urgh. Will definitely repurchase.
  • My morphe 35F palette is starting to get really dusty and for some reason it makes me happy because that just means the palette is so used and not left to rot.
  • I might be developing an addiction to liquid lipstick. Oh noes.

I know this isn't a very adventurous Check Ins post but I just thought I needed to talk about Flip Burger and the worthless hype surrounding Halal Guys.

How did your (last) week go?
