Kushinov Ilya

Elizabeth Comstock from Bioshock Infinite (aka one of the best games I have ever played)
For someone whose specialty or focus is dedicated to illustration design, I sure always seem to stumble on amazing illustrators online. I personally am not very good at illustration even though I can draw more than just a stickman figure but don't tell me to do some digital painting because I can't. still, I love discovering amazing artists online, especially one that does digital painting with mad, god-like skills!

I found Kushinov Ilya by accident on Pinterest and fell in love with his works in that instant. A 1990 Russian-born, he has 6 years of professional experience and is not just an illustrator but is also an art director and comic artist. Currently stationed in Yokohama, Japan, his illustration range from video game, anime and film to original characters although they are not limited to only just that. For more basic information, you can check out his Deviantart portfolio here.

Now, you might think that just because I have a degree in graphics design I'd know what to call this kind of art style. No, I don't (because contrary to popular beliefs, graphics design and fine art are not the same) but based on what I see, I'd like to think his style is that of semi-realism, part cartoon or anime-ish but still believable, if that makes sense. It also reminds me of graphic novels, be it western comic books or Japanese manga. Then again, I personally think his style varies based on the artwork and concept he's doing. I find that when an illustrator can adapt to various concept and style, that is one hella amazing artist that needs to be respected.

Here are some of his works that I have curated for this post. Believe me when I say that it's difficult to only pick some due to how beautiful all of his artworks are.

Non-original characters

Can you name all these characters?

from order of appearance: Hermione Granger, Max Caulfield (Life Is Strange), Faith Connor (Mirror's Edge), Ellie (The Last of Us), Wednesday Addams (The Addams Family), Noctis Lucis Caelum (Final Fantasy XV), Elizabeth Comstock (Bioshock Infinite)

Original characters

I think it's obvious that I fall in love with his portrait artworks. I love how he drew each and every nook and cranny of his characters; the details are always there. In my opinion, the charm point of his illustration is their eyes. I love illustrations with wide, big rounded doe eyes. They remind me of characters from graphic novels too.

For more information and artworks, be sure to pay a visit to his portfolio, artstation and/or patreon. He's also available on instagram, facebook and tumblr.
