Check Ins 002

We are back with another Check Ins post for this week! I'd like to thank those who have commented on my first Check Ins post, expressing your interest to read about my boring daily life updates. I don't have a very flattering life but I'll try to keep this a thing. I'm actually thinking of finally using a notebook to jolt down and take notes of what happened in a day so I can have a record of some sort.

Life

001. I've been experiencing eczema flare-ups on my thigh, knees and the back of my legs. It's a weird one though because they don't look like discoid (coin or disc-shaped) eczema and I'm not sure if it's still considered discoid, nummular eczema or it's something else because some of them look like spots. Whatever the type is, I still think all of them are eczema flare-ups since they're dry and rash-like to the touch. I've been slathering myself with body oils and body butters like crazy. I feel like a greasy hot dog but whatever, I'll do whatever it takes to keep my skin hydrated.

002. The first time I tried Starbucks chai tea latte, I quite enjoyed it. The second time I bought it off the Starbucks near my house, it tasted like nothing but spiced bland water! Urgh, so absolutely disappointing. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that I ordered my chai tea latte the second time in venti instead of grande size. To be honest. I don't care because Starbucks is supposed to brew your drink with constant quality so I was really disappointed about it.

003. Went to watch Arrival with the boyfriend and holy-freckin-sh*t that movie is gold! It's definitely one of the best sci-fi films ever! I'd go as far as to say that Arrival stands on the same league with Christopher Nolan's 2014 sci-fi blockbuster, Interstellar. Arrival has such a unique plot and an unusual turn of event as it brings in the concept of time, language and humanity altogether. It may not be a 120 minutes movie but it's a great one nonetheless. It's mysterious, unexpected and very intriguing! I'd rate it a fixed 9/10.

004. Boyfriend got a free meal (main course, dessert and iced tea) from this one restaurant called Socieaty. It's a pretty fancy restaurant with a pretty fancy price, something that we don't really go for during dates (simply because we like to be economical and saving) but hey, free meal will never sound bad. Anyway, boyfriend got a free meal because the restaurant's having this "Chosen Name Of The Week" and this week's name happens to be my boyfriend's. Very lucky, that guy. He ordered Connard, a crispy duck leg confit served with sauteed mushroom and pommery mustard mashed potato. We also ordered a Tuna Pizza With Sambal Matah (a Balinese raw chili best and usually served with grilled fish) which is soooo frickin delicious! For dessert, boyfriend and I chose Floating Island, a light meringue drizzled with vanilla sauce and candied almond. The dessert tastes extremely soft and though it looks like sponge cake, it has such a foamy texture that it felt like we're eating foam and not cake. We personally did not enjoy the dessert and regret not choosing the souffle instead.

005. I told myself not to buy anything beauty related first but when my feet took me to the drugstore, I end up purchasing two mascaras: the Maybelline Falsies Push-Up and Catrice Glam & Doll False Lash Effect. I was debating between the Maybelline Lash Sensational or the Falsies Push-Up but end up choosing the latter because I'm always looking for more volume. As for Catrice, I have never tried anything from them and I'm curious. Without looking into reviews, I bought the mascara on impulse and I think I should have picked their 3D Lash Multimizer Effect instead since the Glam & Doll looks like it's made for lengthening and not much volume. In my defense, I decided to get new mascaras because I bought the Maybelline Falsies last year and I hate it so much I don't wanna use it anymore. In total, alongside the L'oreal Miss Manga and L'oreal Voluminous Superstar, I have 4 mascaras in my stash.

What to watch

001. I've been watching A Series of Unfortunate Events Netflix series and it's been a good ride so far. I may not read the book and you may think I'm biased because I love the 2004 movie adaptation so much but I swear I'm not. It really is an interesting series. I also love how Netflix added bits and pieces of their originality into the series such as adding an original character played by Sara Canning and some twists that make us question whether or not the Bauldelaire parents really died. The setting, costume and everything are also very entertaining to watch! As much as I love Jim Carrey as Count Olaf, Neil Patrick Harris isn't all that bad. I do miss Jude Law as Lemony Snicket though. The Bauldelaire children, played by Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and Presley Smith did a pretty good job too. I can't wait for season two to unravel more about the secret organization!

002. I've been watching UK YouTuber Lucy Moon and enjoying it. She's not "yet another beauty YouTuber" and she talks about...well, a lot of things. Her videos are also very artsy too and that's what I love about Lucy. In a way, she reminds me of the content Arden Rose would upload to her channel. One of my favorite videos from Lucy is when she talked about "The Wrong Type of Skinny."

003. Speaking of Arden Rose, she and Lucy Moon just did a video answering questions and giving advices about crushes, relationship and others. The collaboration is split into two parts: on Lucy's channel and on Arden's. Arden also uploaded a promotional video for her book, entitled "Almost Adulting" which I have included in my to-read list.

004. Discovered Safe Dream by Tep No ft. Heather Janssen on Spotify recently and it's been stuck in my head ever since. It's such a relaxing, laid-back song that is perfect for any mood, especially when you want to feel calm or need a lullaby-like song to fall asleep. Highly highly recommended.

Reading

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

I'm trying to read more these days even though it has been difficult for me because the moment I lay myself in bed, I turn into a drowsy, lazy sloth. I miss how much of a better reader I used to be. Still, I'm trying to make a mission to finish at least one book this year. My current read is still David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks which is a fantasy / drama genre. The book itself is, in my opinion, a blend of Cloud Atlas and Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. Like Cloud Atlas, The Bone Clocks is divided into six sections, all written in first-person narratives from different individuals and loosely connected by a character named Holly Sykes who found herself involved in a war between two immortal factions, the Horologists who are able to reincarnate and the Anchorites who gain immortality by murdering others.

Cyberspace

001. A strawberry milk recipe by Bon Appetit has been bookmarked in my browser lately for future reference. I'm thinking of trying the recipe out and brewing myself a fresh glass but I'm not sure when I'll get to do it. It's a quick and fairly easy recipe though, nothing fancy going on there.

002. My recent favorite blog read: Adele of Naemora! I've been reading and following her posts diligently and I swear, every time I see a new post from Naemora on my bloglovin feed, I will definitely click it. Her blog is all about sustainable and zero waste lifestyle, minimalism, feminism and girl power. Be sure to check her blog out :)

That's all there is for this week. Now it's your turn, what have you been doing this week? Share your weekly highlights in the comment box below!

  1. Oh I hope your skin will feel much better soon! It's so strange that the chai tea latte tasted so different a second time?!
I loved Lucy Moon and Arden's collab videos! Both their contents are so amazing. That book sounds so interesting btw. Gotta love the cover of it. <3

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.

  2. I originally disliked the Maybelline Falsies because of the brush, but seeing as I paid good money for it for it, I decided to start using it again after my other mascaras started drying up. The verdict? I actually quite enjoy it--gives me really nice, long lashes that actually does look like I'm wearing falsies.

My friends came over Friday night (after work, after school tingz) and we marathoned A Series of Unfortunate Events until the AM. I actually feel asleep during the last episode (LOL), but I really enjoyed the show! Can't wait to see season 2, and man, it was like a How I Met Your Mother reunion on that show, I swear

  3. To be honest, life updates are my favourite kind of blog posts to read. I enjoy reading about people's lives, how their minds work and how they respond to events in life. I'm sorry to hear your eczema flaring up :/ Omg I've been wanting to watch Arrival for ages but didn't have the time ;u; Will definitely watch it soon! And I like Lucy Moon too :')

Also, kinda random but I want to let you know your blog is becoming one of my favourites to read. It's so nice to see another fellow introvert who writes such insightful posts and I really enjoy reading all of them. I wish I'd discovered your blog sooner.

  6. Everyone or at least, every scifi lover should watch Arrival imo. Those who are dense and (excuse me) intellectually challenged should stray away from it because they will end up bashing the movie when in truth, it's their incapability to understand the concept and depth that prevents them to appreciate it. The other day I heard two scatterbrained girls commenting "this movie is so weird! I don't get it at all!" and i grumbled "of course you don't understand. You're a ditzy scatterbrain who's better off watching dumb movies with simple nursery plots. Now go and take a selfie." lol #sorrynotsorry but you know what i mean....i hope.

The kiss me heroine is such a hardcore mascara, isn't it? I heard they are difficult to remove. I've never tried the kiss me heroine mascara but i did try majolica majorca and i love them. The dollywink mascara is awesome too!
I haven't tried the maybelline falsies push-up but when i do, i'll tell you bout it. I hope it's not as shitty as the maybelline falsies, the one in purple tube.

  7. Yes, more people should watch Arrival!

Aw, thanks Nana. Your blog is quickly becoming one of my daily reads too. It's so nice of you to think that i write insightful content because i never see myself like that. It's more of a "write the truth and whatever is in my mind" kind of thing haha

  8. Hi Eena :)

I like The Bone Clocks so far. It does have a mellow and slow pace so some people might grew impatient and find it boring. The suspense buildup is pretty slow but i'd say if you like a detailed, intricate story then try giving it a go.

  9. The maybelline falsies is awful! The formula is dry and i have to rush when applying it but when i do, it gives me so much clumps (the ugly kind of clumps) and makes my lashes look like sparse spider legs! I don't mind clump effect for volume but the maybelline falsies is bad news. I heard so many people raving about it being the best maybelline mascara but urgh, ew no. I hope the falsies push up is different.

  10. I like Starbucks’ chai tea latte but after a couple of years of having it I am also tasting the weird spiced water taste. I have soy milk, so I sense it might be something to do with them putting too much water instead of steaming enough milk... also, that, and the fact that sometimes they use different soy milks and I can fucking. taste. it. I hate when I ask for soy and they give me almond milk. Like holy fuck! I apologise for my profanity... but soy milk is totally not almond milk. Grrrrrr.

I try to ask them to put a shit ton of cinnamon powder on top – not sure how you like yours but I find that adds a bit to the “correct” flavour. Starbucks has dropped from being my favourite chai to just being normal. I’m always on the hunt for super good chai, and I like the masala chai that they create at my workplace sometimes.

I have a name that would pretty much never be on one of those days where they give you free food/drinks if your name is John. My name is too rare haha. Also if they did Georgy would I be allowed? Or not because my name is spelled differently? 😜

  11. Hope the flare-ups will tone it down a bit soon! I've never had a chai tea latte from Starbucks before but it's definitely the rage over here. You guys need some better Starbucks baristas in your neighborhood! First, they don't know about making the pink drink and now this?

I can't believe Interstellar was a movie from 2014! Glad you enjoyed watching Arrival. Your boyfriend got lucky with having a free meal at the restaurant. It's cute that he enjoyed the meal with you :).

I heard about A Series of Unfortunate Events being out. I remembered reading the books when I was in elementary school. I'm definitely putting this on my binge-watch list. Speaking of strawberry milk, I gotta find myself some legit recipe that's used in the Taiwanese specialty shops XD.

  12. yeah it's really tough to remove but it does the job really nicely. so so worth it (i got 30% off when i bought it last year too teehee). i always use maybelline clean express total clean to remove my eye makeup. it's a bit harsh for dry skin but that squeaky clean feel is unbeatable! the trick is to press it down on the lids for a while and let your mascara dissolves itself :D

no worries, i feel u! i hate it when people just can't see past to dig what the movie really try to convey. moviegoers who watch movie to be called 'hip' is the worst ugh.

  13. I recently started reading Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children because I saw it in the bookstore and remembered that it was one of your book recommendations. I only just started it but it's really interesting so far! I can also relate to turning into a drowsy, lazy sloth once you get into bed, haha. Sometimes I want to read more but then I get really tired and remember that I have to wake up early :/

I haven't been able to start the Lemony Snicket series on Netflix yet but now I'm even more interested in watching it! I heard that Lemony Snicket helped out with the series too, so I'm sure that adds some kind of authenticity compared to the books.

I hope your eczema flare-ups go away soon!
