The Year Limited

30/12/2016

No, this is not one of those "New Year's Resolution" post because I personally do not come up with such things and I find them pretentious. I mean come on, how many people actually do the things in that list? If you are one of the rare species then you're amazing but it's just not for me. Instead, I'm going to review the highlights of this year. Mind you, this doesn't come easy for me.

Life

To be honest, life has not been very cooperative this year. There are more downs than ups but I am determined to read between the lines. Some of these things are probably nothing but recaps because I've mentioned them in this post before. But it goes like this:

January 25th — first month of the year and already I got a boyfriend, ha! Well, to be fair, A and I have been close since last year but it was not until January this year that my status changed. It was hilarious because this is our first relationship ever — yes, virgin babies — but we've been through a lot of things together that have taught and shaped us for the better. From this, we will continue to grow. Fingers crossed.

Surviving college — survived my thesis, survived my thesis defense, survived college and managed to graduate on time! *fist bump myself* kudos to me and my mental strength.

Two birthday cakes — I may not like birthdays but I love my cake. I got a Tous les Jours fresh cream cake from boyfriend and bought this one for myself. Frankly I love the fresh cream cake better because it was less sugary sweet.

The best friend, N — this year, I'm grateful for my best friend N (who I briefly talked about here). She also taught me several things in life, gave me some meaningful and logical advice. She's also the only one friend who really understands the meaning of loyalty and co-existence.

Comic Con 2016 — I went to this year's Comic Con with boyfriend and friends for two days straight. It was huge and way better than last year too. Briana Hildebrand, who played Teenage Warhead in Deadpool, was one of the guest stars this year. I personally wasn't extremely excited for the guest panel (since I'm not a fan of Teenage Warhead) but it was a fun experience anyway. I also bought a Bioshock Infinite's Elizabeth Comstock funko pop and a Bulbasaur stuffed toy as souvenirs. I hope one day I can go to the real Comic Con in San Diego.

Health

I never really talked about my health on the blog because I feel like it's such a personal thing I don't want to discuss. This year, I had around 2-3 months worrying about what caused my lymph nodes to swell. A swollen lymph node may not be as terrifying to some but I had like... five. Five freaking swollen lymph nodes — three on the right side of my neck, two on the left. I had to go back and forth to my GP because he told me to undergo several blood tests. Fortunately, there was nothing serious — the tests for tuberculosis and toxoplasmosis came out negative. In the end, my GP concluded that it's probably a viral infection because I have a weak immune system. The test also revealed my vitamin D efficiency because I'm the kind of person who doesn't get sun exposure, at all. If you remember, I am terrified by sunlight due to it being one of the many triggers to my eczema flare-up. I also sneeze whenever I'm exposed to too much sunlight, I'm not joking.

Luckily, the lymph nodes are no longer troubling me. They can still swell from time to time if my immune system is fighting against an illness — it's normal and can happen to anyone so don't worry 'bout that. All in all, I just have to take vitamin D supplement to maintain my immune system.

Blogging

This year, I have done a few changes on my blog. I purchased a new domain, re-boxed my blog and changed my perspective on how I write my blog or how I want my blog to be perceived. I even added some regular series, called Columns, to make my blog looks more organized and scheduled. As I'm putting more effort into blogging and my blog, I also came across new cool blogs that have inspired me so much that I look up to whenever I'm in a rut.

Honorary mention goes to:

And of course, I'm also highly grateful to those who have made time reading and commenting on my post.

TV Shows

One, I'm a fan of DC Comics and superheroes. In fact, I like DC more than Marvel — yes, very controversial, huh...but please, no dissing because the whole DC vs Marvel thing is stupid and I'd rather not butcher you. Two, DC series are the only tv series I really keep up with. This year, it's all about The Flash Season 3, Arrow Season 5, Supergirl Season 2 and Legends of Tomorrow Season 2! Since I don't want to spoil anything, I'm not going to be very detailed about it. Just a catch, The Flash Season 3 is probably the winner out of them all.

(I also watched Stranger Things as a  break from all the DC madness. Can't wait for season two!)

If you watch them too, do tell me about it so we can flail about them together!

Filmography

I may not watch as many films in cinemas as last year but I've watched quite a lot, if I may say so myself. I think the reason why I don't really go to cinemas as often as last year is because I'm getting more selective than before. I mean, I always have been selective because I don't want to pay for cliche films that I can watch via download just fine but this year, I'm even more picky and selective. Still, here are some films that I watched and did not regret:

  • Fantastic Beast & Where To Find Them

  • All Marvel films except Dr. Strange

  • Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

  • Now You See Me 2

  • Zootopia

  • Star Trek Beyond

  • others that I cannot remember at the moment...
Other than blockbusters, I've been watching (and re-watching) some films on my desktop too. Some of the highlights include Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom, The Double (starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska) and of course, all seven Harry Potter films (that I will never get tired of) #SlytherinHouse #SlytherClaw for the win, heh.

Others

In Retrospect

I'm not gonna lie, this year has been pretty shitty. It's difficult for me to write this post because I swear I had to dig deep for the good things that have happened so as to not be completely negative about 2016. Still, like I said a million times already, there have been more downs than ups. Nevertheless, the fact that we're two days away from 2017 made me realize that I have survived the year and I will have to do it all over again next year. I would also like to thank those who have read and commented on my post — it means a lot to someone who began blogging with the thought that she's too boring to amuse anyone.

I may not have any NYE resolution prepared but if I did, one of them will definitely be to write better blog post in the future. Last but not least, how many of you realized that the title of this post is a reference to Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited film? *wink*

What were this year's highlights for you?

  2. Haha I usually set myself goals instead of resolutions, but this year I've just set myself one goal that I can work towards.

I think 2016 has been a pretty bad year for a lot of people. But it's great that you started a relationship and graduated from college. Go you!

I'm going to check out those blogs you have recommended. :)

I think the best film I saw this year was Deadpool. A lot of Fantastic Beast was filmed in Liverpool, just down the road from where I used to live, so I actually all the sets. Pretty cool.

I hope 2017 is an amazing year for you!

  3. This is such a great post! So many people have been doing a year recap, it makes me want to do one too, haha. Congrats on finishing college and finishing your thesis and I am so jealous you got to go to Comic Con!! It's great to look back at all your achievements and realize how many things you've accomplished over the course of 12 months.

I've also been wanting to give my blog a makeover, which I might, but I'm having difficulty finding a new look/organizational system that I really like.

And as you probably already know, I'm also partial to DC (over Marvel). Only because nothing can really trump my love for Batman for comics :D Looking forward to all your posts in the new year!

dude, i sneeze whenever i'm exposed to everything. to sudden cold, direct sunlight, even stranger with funny smell. wtf nose T_T but i hope your 2016 would be more healthier. you're on the right track with the tea though!

  6. and now I'm the one who's flattered haha thank you for the compliment! I never thought anyone would see my blog in such a way. (bluntness is in my blood, just like sass and sarcasm. can't do anything bout that *wink*)

my nose is sensitive to scents too! which is why i hate intense perfume smell, yikes.

  8. That picture is from the movie 'The Darjeeling Limited' right?
    (I loveeee that movie!)
And who doesn't love cake right?!
I love superheroes and fantasy stories and such as well but
I'll be honest that all these mentioned DC tv shows are not
the greatest. I loved Arrow season 1 but 2 was meh. The
Flash makes me cringe but for some reason I can't stop watching.
And lastly Supergirl, the first ep. were cringy as well but after
ep. 4/5 it actually have gotten better! Stranger Things, omg,
I loooove this show so so much I can't wait for season 2 c:
Have a great NYE and a wonderful 2017!!

  9. Zootopia is such a cute movie!
I enjoyed reading your recap of 2016.
    Cheers to 2017. :)

  10. yup, the picture is from darjeeling limited! i like that movie too but i still love grand budapest more :P

supergirl season 1 sucks because it was on the wrong channel. season 2 supergirl moved from CBS to CW aka on the same channel with Flash and Arrow. it's not AMAZING yet in terms of plot but i think, it will get there. just like ARROW and FLASH. i think the more i watch them, the better they get and the cooler they become. arrow season 4 is the worst though. season 3's epilogue was awesome imo. i can't quite remember season 2 tbh LOL

    p.s: thank you for following!

  11. I hope you do have a much better 2017! Like you said, even though 2016 wasn't the greatest year, you still made it. 🌷

  12. I'm rooting for you and your boyfriend! Keep the relationship growing and work on making the bond stronger (together). :)! Congratulations on graduating! It's a great achievement that you graduated on time. One thing is out of the way now X'D.

I'm glad to hear that the lymph nodes were nothing serious and that it's under control. Keep on getting those nutrients ;)!

I love the direction you're pushing your blog to along with the effort that you're making! #Goals

Shoot, I need to catch up with all of these DC TV shows! Hey, what about Gotham? XD. Oooho Zootopia is a cute movie. Doctor Strange is a pretty good movie even though I thought it'd be boring.

Hey, hope next year will be a better year for you. You deserve all of the happiness.

  13. I totally love that you changed your URL to one that is really fitting and short and just kick-ass. I was planning to switch over to heygeorgie.co this year but we will see how I go! 😆 I will probably miss the dot in my URL but, yeah.

I am sorry that 2016 was difficult for you too. 😞 I understand that you refrained from blogging about it, too. I am glad that nothing serious came out of discovering your swollen lymph nodes. Health scares can be very worrying – I should actually get a lump in my breast checked out by a specialist, tests came back as nothing to worry about but still good to see a specialist to follow up on these things.

Nick and I got together from being friends and being really close with each other first. I am happy to see that you have someone in your life who has made a difference and continuously supported you! 😊 Happy anniversary for this month hehehe ❤

I have to mention that I also dislike New Years resolutions because they are often a little pretentious. And I don’t know how to describe it but they also seem silly. I know it is a great time to make goals because the year just started, but I make goals when I think it is a good time to do so. Not just because of a new year or a new month. I always strive to make progress! Not just trash the last year and try to "start fresh".

One thing I read on the internet a while ago was "New year new me? Bitch you're still the same person" 😆 😆

  14. Sorry to hear that 2016 wasn't that good for you, but congrats on your achievements and those are nice highlights! That's awesome that you graduated this year and survived your thesis defense. That is stressful stuff and you got through it! I'm also glad that you've had a close friend who is there for you. That's one of the best things in life to have. I wish the best for you and your boyfriend too!

Aahh, that's scary about the lymph nodes and having to do so many tests. I'm so glad that it's nothing serious! I feel the same way about blogging about my health. It's not even something I really share in person either. Good to hear the lymph nodes are no longer a problem though!

I like what you've done to your blog this year! When it comes to TV shows and movies, I don't totally remember what I've watch this year. I feel like it was mostly Anime for shows, and on movies, Arrival might be my favorite. I really liked Zootopia too!

I hope 2017 will be better for you! Happy new year!

  15. I wasn't very good at resolutions till last year. I think I did pretty well and I'm proud of it :P 2016 seemed to be a shit year for most people. Mine was very challenging with difficulties in every corner! :( But we got through it, hopefully, 2017 is a lot better! 😎

Ahh, I find you and your boyfriend (from tweets youve posted etc) adorable. I hope you continue to grow together and that you're happy and fulfilled. Well done in surviving college! I'm so proud of you!!

I'm glad your lymph nodes are no longer troubling you. My brother just had swollen lymphs last year and it freaked him out a lot, theyve started to die down but I remember at the time he'd be in so much pain!

I LOVE ZOOTOPIA! I think it was my favourite film of the year xD
